Groundwater source protection zone
High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, defines a groundwater source protection zone as: ‘A defined area around an abstraction point, within which groundwater is extracted for potable water supply. The area is defined by the Environment Agency on the basis of the length of time taken for groundwater to migrate from a point below the water table to the abstraction point.’
